A larger immigration followed in the 1930s as East European Jews sought refuge in Latin America. On the eve of World War II, scores of German and Austrian Jews escaped to Bolivia. Most Bolivian Jews reside in the capital city of La Paz. The vast majority are Ashkenazim, Jews of Central and East European heritage.
