Worship Services

Our Worship Services are on Erev Shabbat – Friday Evening – at 6:30 PM and on Shabbat Morning (Saturday Morning) at 10:00 AM. All worship services are open to TABI members/families and all on the “approved visitor” list. The one-time visitor form can be found here.

Important information about Friday’s service and Temple security

On behalf of the TABI Board of Directors, we pray that this note finds you, your families, friends, and associates safe as these horrific events in Israel continue to unfold.

For those struggling with kidnapped relatives and those fighting bravely in the IDF, our hearts are with you and your loved ones.

Here at home, please know that Temple Leadership is working non-stop to keep you safe. We, along with Rabbi Mazo, have been in constant contact with federal, state, and local law enforcement to make sure we are alerted to any threats in our area. The Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s office has also let us know that extra patrols of the property began as of yesterday and will continue through December 3rd.

As of today, officials have no information to suggest there is any threat to our Jewish community here in Southern Indiana, but they insist that we stay at a heightened level of awareness and remain vigilant with existing security measures at TABI until further notice.

It is based on that information that we are asking Friday night’s service only be open to members and those previously vetted. The situation is still highly volatile, and we simply don’t have the resources to manage a large, unknown crowd in a way that ensures your safety.

We are grateful for the outpouring of community support and acknowledge that many will want to attend in solidarity. However, we believe it is best for us to come together and process these events as a TABI family without the onus of “hosting” the community.

Please help us by spreading the word to those who might wish to attend.

A reminder that ALL visitors new to TABI must complete the Visitor Form on our website, or they will be turned away. That being said, there will not be time to vet new submissions in time for Friday’s service.

At times like these the strength of community and family are essential, so TABI welcomes all members needing comfort, prayer, and strength as we stand together in support of Israel.

Jewish History in Evansville

Sonnie Cibull recently presented the Jewish History in Evansville to the TABI School.

Gary Mazo

Rabbi

Rabbi Mazo is a native New Englander. He was born in Massachusetts, raised in Connecticut, worked in New Jersey and Cape Cod before accepting the position as Rabbi in Evansville.

Since arriving in Evansville, he has helped to revitalize Temple Adath B’nai Israel and re-establish strong interfaith relationships in the community.  He helped create the One God One Community interfaith program, the Interfaith advisory Committee for Habitat for Humanity, the Evansville Executive Interfaith Partnership and he has also served as an adjunct professor at University of Evansville

Rabbi and Gloria have six children and four grandchildren located from coast to coast. When the Rabbi has free time, he is an avid bike rider and plays the piano, guitar and Mandolin.

Ed Scharf

PRESIDENT

Ed Scharf has been an active member of TABI for over 13 years. Born in Queens, NY and raised in Connecticut, Ed spent ten years in Los Angeles before settling in the Evansville area. His engagement with TABI began when he took over ownership of the Temple website and volunteered to be resident graphic designer. He has served two terms on the board and is currently the Social Action Committee Chairperson overseeing Temple activities that service our commitment to Tikkun Olam (“Healing the world”) and benefit charitable programs throughout the tri-state area.
 
Ed and his wife, Amy, have two amazing daughters who were both bat mitzvah’ed at TABI. Outside of Temple duties, Ed loves landscaping and working on their house, staying active with hot yoga and basketball, and cheering on sports teams that drive Rabbi Mazo crazy. 

Penny Strandberg

OFFICE MANAGER

Penny Strandberg grew up in Carmi, IL and has lived in the Evansville area most of her life. She worked for the Albion Fellows Bacon Center for 25 years before coming to TABI. Penny is a longtime member of Trinity United Methodist Church, where she serves on multiple committees. She has one son, Levi, who is 18 and ready to attend Wabash College in the fall. Penny and her wife, Kristen, got married in New Harmony last year and honeymooned in Costa Rica this past February. Along with traveling, Penny enjoys craft projects, reading books, and spending time outdoors. She is passionate about the local community and loves living in the Haynie’s Corner Arts District, where she and her wife play in a neighborhood wiffleball league. Penny is also a big fan of the Beatles and her family’s two cats and one dog all have Beatles-themed names.

Aaron Riedford

music director

Aaron Riedford, a native of Evansville, has been playing for Shabbat Rocks services since 2008 and took over as music director in 2017. He studied piano at the University of Evansville, graduating in 2009, and is currently completing his PhD in musicology at Indiana University in Bloomington. His doctoral dissertation presents a study of the U.S. folk music scene in the 1950s and 1960s. In addition to piano, he enjoys playing guitar, bass, and occasionally drums.

Religious School

Religious Education and Hebrew School are available to children of families who are congregational members.

Religious School is in session Sundays through the school year.

Membership

At Temple Adath B’nai Israel, you are both valued and valuable. Our congregation welcomes families, singles, and interfaith families. We have many activities to bring both young and old together to celebrate our lives and faith.

The temple data has been successfully transferred into our new Synagogue management software.
